Tiger Tank 59 I Black Hill Fortress is a game that I took one look at and said to myself, “Now this is the kind of game I might enjoy.” This game has a very old school feel to it from how it handles, looks and sounds. But having the retro feel and look doesn’t make a game good. And while this game, at least for me, captures some of that retro feel, it does have some issues.
This is a top down tank game with a very simple premise. You take your tank, destroy the enemy base that spawns enemy tanks and destroy any remaining enemy tanks on the screen. To get to the enemy base you have to go around some barriers and destroy enemy tanks that are patrolling around. The enemy base turrets fire at you constantly and have to be destroyed before you can destroy the base. Taking hits from enemy tank bullets or the enemy base reduces your health while running into enemy tanks will destroy you.
As you destroy enemy tanks, they sometimes drop weapon upgrades. These vary between rapid fire shots, scatter shots and big frontal shots among others. These weapon upgrades are very useful and many times can be the difference between winning or losing a mission. As far as I could tell there is no way to earn extra lives, however every mission you start you get three lives.
I found this to be a challenging game. As mentioned earlier, not getting a weapon upgrade early can put you at a big disadvantage. Also, sometimes you get killed and respawn on top of an enemy tank which kills you immediately. This almost makes some of the game difficulty superficial. And when you lose all your lives you have to start the game over from the beginning. The game has twenty levels and during the course of my review I was only able to get into the third mission. Also, and this is just a personal issue, I found no way to pause the game mid mission.
Overall, I enjoy Tiger Tank 59 I Black Hill Fortress and this is a game I can see myself coming back to. The game has a good retro feel to it and that is something I think the game does well. While the game has some issues, there was nothing here that made me not want to play it. However, this is a game that is for someone that enjoys these types of games. If you want something with a more modern feel to it, you probably want to look elsewhere.
