The Xbox

When I first heard about the original Xbox I was interested, but not sold. A new console from anyone never means it is going to be a successful. I waited a year after the Xbox came out and finally got one once there were enough games out that caught my interest. I will not say that the Xbox was better than the Playstation 2 or Gamecube, that is all a matter of personal choice and perspective. What I can say is that due to the Xbox, I started to move away from PC gaming and started buying more for consoles again.
My first two games I bought with the system were Halo and Mech Assault. Halo was the first time I played a FPS on a console that I found comparable to a PC FPS. Halo was also the first console game I ever played online with. Mech Assault was a different take on Mechwarrior games that I played on the PC, but was still very enjoyable. It was because of these two games that I started to shift some of my gaming focus back to consoles.
There were quite a few early games for the system that I enjoyed. Blood Wake was a good vehicle combat game while Rallisport Challenge is one of the best rally racing games I have ever played. Hunter The Reckoning and Blood Rayne were two third person games that I enjoyed. Being a rail shooter fan, The House of The Dead 3 was a obvious choice for me. Deathrow was a different type of sports game that I got into after playing it for awhile. But it was the mech combat game Phantom Crash that I played the most during this time and a game that I still enjoy playing today.
During the consoles heyday I played a lot of games on the Xbox. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic and Dungeon and Dragons Heroes are both fantastic RPGs. Soul Caliber 2 is one of my favorite fighting games of all time. Third person games such as Freedom Fighters, Kill Switch and Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy were all games that I found to be fun and enjoyable. Star Wars Battlefront and XIII were two more FPS games that I played on the Xbox. Crash N Burn was a racing game that many might not enjoy, but I thought was great. Mercenaries was a great game that I spent a lot of time with after work back when it came out.
My friends and I did have some fun playing some games on the Xbox. Celebrity Deathmatch is not one of the great fighting games on the Xbox. But it was a game that we spend a lot of time on for no other reason that we found it fun. Burnout 2 Point of Impact was a shining example of us enjoying a game. We spent a whole night playing this game, just doing all the crash mode courses over and over. We ended up going to the local game store once they opened and we all bought a copy of the game for ourselves.
There were a lot of franchises that I started playing on the Xbox. I started play the Dynasty Warriors franchise with the third one and still play the franchise today. While I have great memories of Burnout 2, I found Burnout 3 Takedown to be better in every aspect. The Mortal Kombat games were all favorites of mine on the system, particularly Deception. Fatal Frame is another series that once I started playing I had to play the rest in the series.
Near the end of the consoles lifespan I did not get many memorable games for the system with the exception of two. Justice League Heroes was a game that I enjoyed not so much for the story, but the sheer amount of playable characters. Time Splitters Future Perfect, in my opinion, is one of the best console FPS games that I have ever played. You have a good story, crazy characters, arcade and challenge modes, many customization options for matches and a map editor.
Collecting for the Xbox for me has always been fun. If I'm out and I find a game I never saw before and it is cheap I will usually pick it up. Over the years I have gotten and played many Xbox games. Nowadays though I have most of the games that I want. If I was ever going to go for a complete collection of any system, it would be this one.
I have a lot of great memories with my Xbox. I played many great franchises on the system and many of these franchises I still continue to play. While I was never big into Xbox Live, what little I did play online I found enjoyable. After the original Nintendo system, this is my next favorite console.
