The Playstation 2

When I got my Playstation 2 in 2002, I was mostly focused on the fact it could play DVDs. At this time I was more focused on PC games and consoles were a second thought. As time went on that mindset shifted back to consoles which lead to me to spend an equal amount of time between consoles and PC. The Playstation 2 is a very popular system, with new games coming out in 2013. While I'll admit the Xbox was my console of choice this generation, I did get alot of great games for the system.
Early on when I got my Playstation 2 I did not get many games for it. Smuggler's Run and Midnight Club Street Racing were some early games while Tekken Tag Tournament came a little later. Kessen and Oni where two games which were different for me but I enjoyed. The Bouncer was a game that I really enjoyed and is one of my favorite on the system. Legaia 2: Duel Saga was a game that I bought based off of a demo I played at a department store.
I did get a decent amount of notable games for the system that I found enjoyable. Ghosthunter and Champiopns of Norrath were both decent thrid person games that I enjoyed but never beat. SLAI and Fatal Frame 3 were good sequels to games I played on the Xbox. Inyuasha Feudal Combat was a decent fighting game that while not great, I still enjoyed it. Being a fan of the old Transformers cartoon, the Transformers game on the Playstation 2 was a no brainer for me.
The Dragon Ball Z Budokai games were some of my favorite games on the system. This was the first time I played a DBZ game that felt like I was fighting a fight from the anime. The moves were easy to pull off which was nice change of pace from other fighting games I was used to playing. As the game series progresed through the years they added more characters and options to later games in the series. Even today I still enjoy going back to these games.
One important game that I got for the system was Shin Mengani Tensai Persona 4. This is a game I knew hardly anything about going into it and it became my second favorite game of all time. The games story kept me engaged with its interesting plot and unique characters. Because of this game I went back into the Playstation 2 game catalog to explore other games that fell under the Shin Megami Tensa name, like Noctome and Digital Devil Saga series. I even ended up getting a PSP to play the rerelease of the original Persona game and Persona 3 Portable.
With the exception of the Persona games and Burnout Dominator, I did not get any new games for the Playstation 2 after 2006. By this time I had moved on to the Xbox 360 and really didn't buy much for older consoles. That is not to say there were not any good games for the system during this time, I just was not looking for them. I still collected some use games here and there, but it was not something that I was going out looking for.
The Playstation 2 is a system that I actively collect for now and as time has moved on I have added many games to my collection. The Playstation 2 has a large catalog of games spanning virtually every genre out there. One nice thing about favoring one system over another during its active lifespan is that when you go back to the other one afterwards, you can ususally find a lot of great games for the system that are cheap. This is usually my experience when I go out now looking for games on the Playstation 2. It has not been uncommon for me to go to a used game store and get 5-10 Playstation 2 games at a shot for a good price.
Looking back the Playstation 2 was a versatile system. Being backwards compatable with Playstation 1 games combined with the Playstation 2 library of games gives you a lot of content to look through. Throw in that it also works as a dvd and cd player and you have a nice mutilmedia unit. The system is home to a lot of great game franchises that I never got a chance to play at the time. It is nice to go back now and try to find some of the hidden gems on the system that I never got.
