The Playstation 1

While the Playstation 1 came out in 1995, I never got one until Christmas of 1998. When the Playstation came out I was into PC gaming and was not too interested in consoles. However, when I did get one I enjoyed the system and ended up getting some great games for it over its lifespan. I have a greater appreciation for the system now that I am older and this is one of the main systems that I try to collect for now.
Some of the early games that I got for the system were Future Cop LAPD, WWF Warzone, Alien Trilogy, and Metal Gear Solid. Future Cop LAPD was a decent game but I really enjoyed its Precient Assault mode. WWF Warzone was a game that guys from my lunch table in high school kept talking about on a daily basis. Alien Trilogy was a decent attempt of doing a first person Aliens game. While I was not much of a fan of the Metal Gear Solid, by brother liked it and became a fan of the series. Metal Gear Solid was also a reason we ended up getting a turbo Barracuda controller for the Playstation 1.
The Final Fantasy series was a big franchise on the system and one that we collected just about all the games for on the system. Final Fantasy 7, while not my favorite, was still a very important game in the franchise. Final Fantasy 8 and 9 were also good games in the series that while they had different stories were more of the same. Final Fantasy Tactics was my personal favorite of all the PlayStation 1 Final Fantasy games. This game had a good story, good graphics, good combat and a great job system. Later on after the system was past its prime I was able to get Final Fantasy Origins, Chronicles and Anthology. Adding all of these games to my collection really did make the Playstation 1 the home of Final Fantasy.
While I do not remember playing many coperative games with my brother on the Playstation 1, two games come to mind. Contra Legacy of War was one that him and I put a lot of time into since we were big fans of the original contra games. Wargames Defcon 1 was probably played more than it should have, but since I am a huge fan of the original Wargames movie, I just made him play this game with me when he was around. We did play some other games like Future Cop LAPD, but overall we never did a lot of cooperative gaming on the Playstation 1.
Arc the Lad Collection has to be one of the best series that I played on the Playstation 1. I enjoyed the combat system and the sheer amount of content to do. Arc the Lad 2 added more charactrers and more content to do. While I never played much of Arc the Lad 3 and Are the Lad Monster Tournament, they still made this a worthwhile purcahse for the system. I think what I liked most was that you were able to transfer your completed save data from the first game into the second game.
The Playstation was home to other great franchises that I started playing on the system. Gran Turismo was, at the time one of the best racing games I had ever played. Medal of Honor was one of the first first person shooter games on a console that I beat. Monster rancher had a different system of putting in random cds to unlock new monsters. Road Rash was a racing game that I put a lot of time into when I got it. Resident Evil is a massive franchise now but when I played the first game I found it to be an amazing game. Sadly, I never got around to playing Resident Evil 2 or 3.
As time went on, other notable games I enjoyed were Duke Nukem Time to Kill, Soul Blade and Destrega. Duke Nukem Time to Kill was a decent third person shooter that came out around the time Duke Nukem 3D was popular on the PC. Soul Blade was a good weapon based fighting game that paved the way for the rest of the Soul Caliber series. Destrega, while not the greatest game on the Playstation 1, became my favorite due to its easy rock, paper scissors combat system. There were other games that I got during the consoles lifespan but these are the memorable ones for me.
While I have always collected for the Playstation 1, it has always been one of those systems that if I'm out or online and see an interesting game for it I'll pick it up. It has been only recently that I have been actively looking for certain Playstation 1 games. The only exception to this was when I was looking for a copy of Ogre Battle Limited Edition. When I finally was able to get this game for my collection I was not disappointed.
The Playstation 1 is a great system and one I should have spent more time with. The system spawned and maintained a slew of franchises, most of which are still around today. Nowadays I find the system to be fun to collect for when I'm going to retro game stores.
