I was intrigued when I first saw Stickman Fighting. Back in the late 90’s I remembered an old QBasic game that was along the same premise as this game. That game all of your characters were stickman and all of the stages were in a wire frame format. The stages had interactive environments that could kill you and I believe each of the characters had special moves. This game has nothing like that. While the game does succeed in some areas, the gameplay is what kills it for me.
The game has two modes, a forty level story mode and a ten level survival mode. In both modes you only play as one character. As you progress through story mode, you fight 1 v 1 fights that get tougher while survival mode throws more enemies at you each level. Winning in both modes gives you experience and gold.
Gold is used to purchase items and gear for your character. There are five gears slots that range from weapons to armor slots. There are multiple items you can buy for each slot and they increase your damage and defense. You can also purchase items that can help you in battle like healing items. Gear is shown on your character by colored bands around your head, hands, waist and feet.
This is not a traditional fighting game. Instead of the fighters fighting on solid ground, when the fight starts you can move around the whole screen. The movement looks like ragdoll physics and combat happens when you collide with the other fighter. There are buttons for punching and kicking that are linked to timers on the bottom of the screen, like special powers. Besides the health bar for each player, your character starts turning from black to red the more damage you take.
I have three major issues with this game. First off is while there are multiple gear pieces to buy, only the best gear matters and that can be earned very quickly. I didn’t even need to buy consumable items to help me win any matches. Secondly, there is no challenge in this game. I beat the whole game, both story and survival mode, in thirty minutes. I only had trouble with the last two story levels. Lastly, the combat feels weird and just unfun. I feel that this was the game’s biggest downfall.
I liked that the game has equipment options for the player. I liked that there was a survival mode and the story mode had a noticeable feel of progression to it. The game looks basic but good while the audio gets the job done. However the combat is the one thing I could not get over. Maybe on a mobile platform it is passable. On a PC with a controller I had no challenge or real fun.
