Space Codex is a game that takes the look of a retro game from the 80’s mixed with with the endless gameplay of a pick up and play game. The game only has one goal: kill everything and survive as long as possible. When you start you get to pick from three ships that either focus on speed, power or acceleration. You can also pick a dark mode, which makes it that the only view you have is a small circle around your ship.
The actual gameplay has you fly around the map while your ship is constantly firing bullets trying to destroy any enemy that comes your way. You can boost your ship to gain a quick jolt of speed while you can charge your weapon to fire a more powerful shot. To help you out with destroying the enemy there are powerups that show up on the map such as health, shields and temporary weapon upgrades. This is all important since the game sends enemies at you constantly and never lets up. While there are a few different enemy types, they are all spaceships that move and fire bullets at different speeds. The game ends when you lose all your lives and then you just start over and do it again.
As mentioned earlier, this game has a retro look to it. While the player and enemy ships look decently detailed, all of the colors are some shade of purple, pink and turquoise. The game only has one stage and while there is some detail to it, it is pretty basic. The audio was pretty good, with the music being especially well done.
This is a game for someone who likes retro games, This is also a game for people who like games that you can play in short bursts. The game does get tough quickly, but it never feels unfair. While I wish there was more to do in the game, what the game does do it does well.
