Sometimes I find games that have a unique premise. Shark Attack Deathmatch 2 is a first person game where you fight other players and sharks. Games like this are designed first and foremost for multiplayer. Games like this also lead to the question, “What happens when the online community for the game goes away?”.
The game has a few multiplayer modes such as deathmatch, Co-Op survival and a predator mode where you get to play as a shark attacking other players. You can customize the color of all your gear to give yourself a unique look. For single players there is a survival mode. Due to a lack of players online to do any of the multiplayer modes this review is going to focus on the survival mode.
The goal of survival mode is to last ten minutes killing any sharks that you see. Besides your knife you get a spear gun and you can find a chain gun that fires spears. Ammo for these weapons spawns and respawns at the same spots on the maps. You have oxygen that gradually depletes and goes down faster when you sprint around. Oxygen can be found on the map and it always takes you back to full when you get it. There is no extra health that I could find so Once your health goes to zero you are dead.
There are seven different stages in the game to pick from. Each map has its item placements and hiding spots. The sharks seem to spawn randomly and will come after you if they see you. There are a few varieties of sharks and each one gives you points for killing them. Killing great white sharks increases your score multiplier and when you finally die you make it ten minutes your score is posted on a leaderboard. Overall the mode is fun and kept me entertained.
The game looks pretty good graphically. While the stages pretty much look the same there are differences in each one to make them unique. The lighting and water effects were good and helped give the impression that you were underwater. The sharks also good and I liked the blood effect that trails them when they get hit. While there is really no music in the game the sound effects were well done.
While the multiplayer is dead in this game, I still enjoyed it. The graphics look good and the gameplay is solid. The concept for the game is something I have not seen before and it works. However, with the multiplayer dead if you're a solo player you are left with survival mode which can get boring fairly quickly. So unless you have friends, if you are looking for a multiplayer experience you may want to look somewhere else.
Disclaimer: The multiplayer part of this game was not tested for this review. I know the multiplayer part of the game works since my brother and I played the Co-Op survival mode a few years ago. However, when I was playing this game for the review there were no games going on online
