In 2002 I was going to the local mall with one of my friends when I got a call on my cellphone. It was my brother asking me if we could stop by a local used game store to pick up a SNES game called Plok. I had no idea what this game was but since we were going right by the place I said I would pick it up. We get to the store, go in and I find the game. I look at the cover and see this werid red and yellow looking character asking myself why the hell my brother wanted this game. For the past 13 years I occasionally poke fun at my brother about it, even getting him a comic book based off Plok.
Plok is a 2d side scrolling platformer from Software Creations. The premise of the game starts out that you wake up one morning on your island and find out that your flag was stolen. You then go to the neighboring island to get it back from the boss over there. Upon returning to his island he sees that it is overrun by fleas which starts the rest of the game. Not the most original story for a game but it surprisingly works for the game.
While the game lacks in a story it makes up for in presentation. The game uses a vibrant color scheme which I feel works very well for the game. The art design looks cartoony, but is well drawn and fits in with the mood of the game. The level designs are also well done and while they do get repetitve, they feel right at place with the rest of the game. The sound also works well with the game.
The gameplay is what really shines in this game. Combat revolves around Plok firing his arms and legs at his enemies. Occasionally you will find temporary power ups that will give Plok an ability. Certain parts of the game have you lose a arm or leg to keep the stage going, which does give the player a challenge. The controls feel very good and I rarely had a problem with the platforming elements of the game, which says a lot since platforming games are not my favorite games. The difficulty of the game is good, I never found it too hard to get past a level. The game will take you a few hours to beat however this will vary depending if you take warp areas in certain stages to skip ahead or not.
If you enjoy platformers you will enjoy this game. It's weird main character and vibrant cartoonish graphics go well together. Throw in good level design and excellent platforming and you have a game that any SNES game collector should get.
