I usually do not play sandbox or physics games. While I do not have any problems with them, they normally do not interest me. I came across this game during the Steam winter sale and it reminded me of a game my brother and I played back in the very early 2000s. While it is different from that game, Turbo Dismount, I immediately saw a few things in the screenshots that reminded me of it. After putting some time into this game I do not regret my purchase.
People Playground is a game where you get to build contraptions, place objects and people in an open space environment. When you start you can select from a few different types of room sizes. You can add some effects to them like reduced lighting, rain and snow. You then get to start placing and building anything you want onto the map. You are of course limited to the items available in the game, however the game does support outside items to be added in. There is still a lot of freedom to make wacky designs and create unique play areas using the provided items. One fun aspect of this game is seeing how the different items interact with each other. Some objects can be activated and that can create a whole other way to interact with the game.
Once you have everything in place, you then get to destroy those said contraptions, objects and people in an insane amount of ways. The game gives you melee weapons, guns, explosives and other weird ways to directly destroy anything on screen. What I liked is that everything feels different. Shooting a ragdoll with a gun is one thing, shooting it with a minigun and seeing it get dismembered and scattered around the play area is another. You even can use some special powers to affect the play area. But the real fun is seeing what effect using these items has on what you built. That’s the joy of physics games, one small change in a play area can destroy the whole thing.
The play area is just a black and grey area. The items you can place a decently detailed. The effects look great though and do bring an extra joy to the game when you fire a gun or blow something up. The game does not use any real music, just some ambient background sound. However, the sound effects, especially the weapon and explosions, do sound good.
This is the type of game for people who like to use their imagination to build and destroy things. I can see myself playing this game for five minutes a run or an hour depending on what I want to do. This is also the type of game that has no predefined goal and it is up to the player to make their own fun. While I can find some short bursts of fun with this game, others might be put off by that. However, for those with the time and imagination, this game can be a blast. And with the mentioned mod support your options can be endless.
