It is a pretty well known fact that I am a huge fan of Crazy Taxi. I played the original in the arcade and I own almost every version of the game and it's sequels on home consoles. If I ever would make a list of my favorite games of all time Crazy Taxi would be on that list. I came across a mobile version of the game a few years ago and I was a little worried how a racing game was going to translate to mobile controls. However, I feel the game is just as fun on mobile as it is on consoles.
Crazy Taxi is a racing/score attack game that puts you in the role of a taxi driver who has to drive people from place to place. You pick up a person and follow the marker to where they have to go with you getting more money and bonus time the quicker you get there. There are a few driving techniques you can do to help increase your speed like dashing and drifting. Doing stunts and driving aggressively will get you extra money and add to your final score. The main mode of the game lets you do this until you run out of time which at that point you get a score and a rating.
The main arcade mode has you start at fifty seconds and time gets added to your timer when you pick up a person and if you get to your destination faster than normal. You can also set the game to only play for three, five or ten minutes. Besides Arcade mode their is an Original mode that has the same gameplay as Arcade mode but the map is bigger and more spread out. There is also a mode called Crazy Box that lets you do a set of timed challenges and is a good way to master some of the driving techniques in the game. There is also a leaderboard to see where you rank against all the other players in the world.
I was surprised on how well the game handled on my phone. There is a very slight learning curve to driving with touch controls but I got used to it very quickly. The only issue I had was sometimes not stopping fast enough where I was supposed to drop someone off. Even doing the driving techniques was pretty easy with touch controls. While I still would have preferred a controller, I still had fun with the touch controls.
For a mobile port I thought the game looked great. Granted, we are talking about a port of a game that is over twenty years old and was thirteen years old when it came out on mobile. The game looks the same as the Dreamcast version with the exception of the in game advertisements being swapped from real places to generic names. However, the music is the same from the Dreamcast Version which means we get Bad Religion and The Offspring. That alone makes this game worth it to me.
The game has ads but they can be removed for a small fee and that was the only microtransaction in the game. I feel this is a great port of a classic game. The game looks and sounds great and handles really good with touch controls. I guess my only gripe is that they didn't add anything new content to the game and just ported it over to mobile. However, being able to play Crazy Taxi on my phone anytime I want is a great way to waste some time.
