When I first played Gates Of Hell I was not impressed.  A few more times playing the game changed my opinion from not impressed to mediocre.  I like arena, score based games and while this game is far from perfect, it did grow on me.   That is not to say it is a great game by any means.  However, if you give it a chance and some time, it might grow on you to.

The game has you playing as the angel Cassiel who is sent to Earth to fight off the horde of hellish demons that have overrun the Earth.  You pick from one of five starting zones with the goal of surviving waves of enemies that spawn and come at you.  Scattered around the stages are weapons and ammo with new spawns popping up when a new wave starts.  Making it to the end of the final wave takes you the score screen where you are graded on how well you did.  You then go to the next stage and do it again.  When you do die you are given a final score and the game is over.

The gameplay was passable.  The weapons do handle differently and there is some variety to them.  The level designs are pretty basic but they are some areas on each stage to hide and defend yourself.  While I didn't find the gameplay that was broken or buggy in anyway, it just didn't feel fluid to me.  I got used to this after awhile, but I will say I have played arena shooters that have handled better than this one.

The game used a very weird choice for its graphics which did grow on me after awhile.  The tone of the game is dark and the graphics represent that. While I got used to it, I can see some people not liking the graphic path the developers took.  The audio was ok throughout the game.  This game is far from a masterpiece in the arts and sound department, however I didn't find either to be horrific.

As I said earlier, I was not impressed with this game when I first started playing it.  It has a unique look to it and I was not a fan of how the game played.  After putting more time into the game, I can appreciate what the game was trying to go for.  This is not a bad game, but it is also not the best example of a arena shooter.
