Concept Destruction does an interesting take on demolition derby games. Instead of using licensed cars or even real ones, the game uses cardboard cars. I have to give the developer credit, I never would have thought about using cardboard cars in a game like this. And what is even better is the concept works in execution. When you take that and throw in a good presentation, you have a good game on your hands.
The game is all about driving around a stage in a demolition derby style race. As you get hit and hit other cars/environmental objects your car takes damage which is shown on the bottom of the screen. The most common way for you and your opponents to lose is to take too much damage to your engine. The other less common way is to have your battery knocked out of your car which usually happens from a well placed it. The battery can also be collected from defeated cars and acts as your boost. Overall the gameplay was fun and the cars handled well.
The championship mode lets you pick a vehicle and go through eight stages. Each vehicle is rated on speed, weight and maneuverability. The main goal of each stage is to either get the most points before the stage ends or be the last one standing. You get points from smashing into other cars and knocking other cars out. Consequently, you either have to be the last one standing or still be running when time is up; if you get knocked out it counts as a loss. Your score determines your ranking and if you finish the eight race championship with the highest score you win. Also the score in this mode unlocks more cars in the game.
Outside of Championship mode, you have Single Event, Survival and Tourist modes. Single Event is just a single stage event from one of the eight championship stages. Survival mode is the same thing as a Single Event except everyone is coming after you. Tourist mode is a way to explore the stages without taking damage and with no time limit. There is also a multiplayer mode where you and another person can compete against yourselves and the computer.
I feel the game looks and sounds great. While the cars themselves look decent (they are made of cardboard), the way they get mangled and destroyed as you collide into everything looks great. And the debris that gets spread around the stage just adds to the effect, The environments were also well designed and added to the effect you are racing cardboard cars. The games used a heavy metal soundtrack that I enjoyed while the sound effects were good.
This is a game that does one thing and does it well. Demolition derby with cardboard cars might not sound like it would be fun, but this game pulls it off. The game has good visuals and sounds while the gameplay is good enough to play for ten minutes or an hour. My only complaint is that I wish there were more modes besides demolition derby gameplay, but still used the destruction effects. Something like an actual racing mode or racing mode with half the cars going one way and the other half going the other like I’ve seen some games like this do. However, as it is, this is still a good game to pick up.
