CO-OP Corner: Shock Troopers (Arcade)
Shock Troopers is a run and gun arcade game from SNK. The game has been re-released on multiple platforms and for this play through we are playing the PC version. The game has you fighting a group of terrorists called the Bloody Scorpions who have captured a scientist and his granddaughter so he will be forced to create a super serum for his troops. You battle them through six levels eventually getting to the leader of the Bloody Scorpions. The story here is pretty basic and nothing memorable.
The game does give you some options before you actually start playing the game. Besides choosing a difficulty, you get to pick from eight different soldiers. The main difference between each one is which special weapon they have. You also have a choice to play with only one soldier or a team of three that you can swap between. While there are advantages using either option, I preferred using the team of three since it gives you more options as far as special weapons.
Once you get into the actual gameplay, this play like any other run and gun game. You go around, kill enemies, collect weapons that have limited ammo and eventually get to a boss at the end of the stage. The game looks and sounds great and I found the enemy death animations to be fantastic. This is an arcade game so I expected the difficulty to ramp up the farther we got into the game. My only complaint with the gameplay was the controls and that was more an issue with me getting used to the strafing controls than an actual problem with the game.
This isn't a very long game, from start to finish it only took about forty five minutes to complete. The game does let you choose your path at the start of the game and about halfway through, you can change your path so there is some replay value here. You also have a few different difficulty setting to choose from as well as the different soldiers to play as. Overall. I had fun with this game. This is one that I can see myself coming back to in the future.
