BYTEPATH is a game that just looks and feels retro.  From it’s old school text based interface to the wireframe graphics, this is something I would have played back in the mid 90’s using DOS.  As someone who played games from that era, I was immediately interested in this game. After putting some time into it, I have not been disappointed.

When you start all you do is fly around, collect powerups and destroy everything on screen.  Your ship automatically fires regular shots, but when you collect a special weapon, it depletes your special weapon ammo, which you can refill from blue orbs dropped by enemies.  There are also SP orbs that randomly appear and are the game’s currency. There are other powerups such as boost refills and health packs. As the game progresses the enemies become more varied and more abundant.  Hitting other enemies with your ship or getting hit by them reduces your health and when you hit zero the game ends.

You use the SP you earn to unlock a wide range of items.  You can buy new ships that each has their pros and cons. You have a passive tree that is pretty impressive and is filled with small buffs to unlock such as faster attack speed and more health.  You also have classes which are bigger buffs, but usually come at a cost like more health but less firepower. I found this part of the game to be very interesting and it does give you the feeling that you are customizing your playing experience based on your play style.

The only real issue I had was with some of the graphic options in the game.  The game uses some distortion effects that even I, someone who does not get motion sickness, was getting bothered by.  Thankfully, all of those effects can be turned off. I also had this issue that I could not exit the game normally, but that might be by design.  With that said, the sheer amount of customization options and solid gameplay are the things that will bring me back to this game.
