The NES had a lot of great memorable games that helped define the console and let to the start of some great franchises. Then you have games like BreakThru. BreakThru is another classic example of a Nintendo game where the gameplay revolves around memorization. In BreakThru you drive a dune buggy through enemy territory to recapture a top secret plane. Much like the game's story, the game is basic and to the point.
The screen is constantly moving you forward however you can slow yourself down or speed up. Each level has you shooting enemies and jumping over gaps and obstacles. The game does handle well and when I died I never felt it was due to sloppy controls. When going through the levels powerups will fall from the sky and if you can get them they will usually give you more firepower. Most of your gameplay is going to revolve around jumping over your enemies to reach the end of each stage.
Graphically this game gets the job done but its far from the best I've seen on the NES. The stage backgrounds look alright and fit the theme of each stage. The player sprite looks good while most of the enemy sprites look so-so. The audio in the game is basic but like the graphics it gets the job done. The stage music for each stage is the same while the sounds effects are minimal.
Breakthru is a very short game once you know what to avoid on each of the games five levels. The game can be beaten in under 30 minutes and once you do beat it there isn't much reason to come back to the
game. The game's difficulty stems from learning where to jump and when to dodge. Thankfully you have unlimited continues and depending where you die on a stage you start at different parts with the stage when you respawn. While this is nice, it also destroys any challenge associated with the game; if you die just keep doing it over and over until you get it. There is also a two player option however its alternating turns on death.
While BreakThru is far from a great game it does keep things simple and playable. However, after a single playthough there really isn't much reason to come back.
