The Super Nintendo Entertainment System

The SNES was an interesting system for me. When I first got one in 1992 and played Super Mario World I was amazed to the quality of the graphics and sound. The controller was a little bit different from what I was used to but I got the hang of it quickly. Still, during the lifetime of the console we (my brother and I) did not get many games for the system when compared to our NES collection. We did get some of the best games for the system though, which helped reinforce just how great this system is.
Just like when we got the NES, when we got a SNES we also got a Super Avantage Controller. Unlike the NES Advantage, this controller was massive, which was not surprising since they had to add in four extra buttons. The Super Advantage Controller also let you set the sensitivity of the turbo buttons independently and even game you the option to make buttons auto fire. While I did find this controller useful for some games, it was the fighting games that I liked using this controller with. However, also like the NES Advantage Controller, nowadays I use the standard SNES controller and have no problems at all.
Notable early games for the system that we got were Pilotwings, F-Zero and Super Mario Kart. These games helped showcase the graphic and audio power of the SNES system. While Pilotwings and F-Zero spawned a few games later on in there franchises, Super Mario Kart spawned a massive franchise of racing games and its newer games are now system sellers. Mario Paint was another interesting concept that we got around this time as well. I can't call it a game since all you mostly did the the game was paint with it, however the mouse that came with it was also a control choice for some other games that I got years later for the system.
I had a lot of my favorite SNES games come out during the middle of the consoles lifespan. Games like Super Metroid, Final Fantasy 3, Mortal Kombat 2, NHL 94, Tecmo Super Bowl and Street Fighter II Turbo Hyper Fighting. Some of these games made my top ten SNES game list and for good reason. Super Metroid is arguably the best Metroid game in the series while Final Fantasty 3 (acutally 6) is considered to some, myself included, to be the best Final Fantasy game out there. NHL 94 and Temco Super Bowl are two of my favorite sports games of all time. The Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past is another example of my favorite game in a franchise.
Like the NES, my brother and I played quite a few co-op games on the system. Games like Contra 3 The Alien Wars and Teenage Mutant Turtles IV where some of the best on the system while Fire Power 2000 and Battletoads & Double Dragon where great games as well. I particually had fun with Secret of Mana as this was the first time we were able to play a RPG cooperatively. Soldiers of Fortune was another game that was difficult but fun for us to play. Many of these games we still play today when we get together.
Late in the consoles life cycle, we really did not get many SNES games. At this point we had moved onto the Playstation 1 and PC gaming. Super Mario RPG, NBA Tournament Edition and Mortal Kombat 3 were the only real remarkable games that I got during this time. Super Mario RPG was a great RPG for the system that I felt was on of the highlights of the system while Mortal Kombat 3 was a game I spent a lot of time with when it came out. I am not a fan of basketball, but NBA Jam T.E. was a game that I could put in and play anytime I wanted.
Around the time I started collecting old NES games back in the early 2000s I also started collecting SNES games. At that time I had no problem getting games like Lufia 2, The 7th Saga and Final Fantasy 2. And while I enjoy collecting for the system, I also have a hard time doing that since I'm not familar with a lot of the games. We ended up canceling our subscription to Nintendo Power and moved over to PC Gamer so our main source of information on games was gone.
When I look back on the SNES system I see a system that, for its time, had great graphics and audio which hold up well even today. This is a system that had great, memorable games that for some game franchises was the home of there best games. RPGs and fighting games shined on the system and are games I look for in particular when collecting. Looking back I enjoyed my time with the system and the games I had for it. If it wasn't for PC gaming at the time I feel I would have focused more on the system.
