As soon as I started playing Tank Destroyer I was reminded of an old flash game I used to play in study hall back in high school. It was a 2-D game played from a top down view That game was basic, but a fun way to waste some time. I can say the same for this game, the only difference is that instead of 2-D this game is shown in 3-D top down view.
In the game you are a blue tank that shoots red tanks that are trying to shoot you. There are three different types of enemy tanks that take one or two shots to defeat. If you get hit once you die and have to restart the level. The A.I. starts on a scripted path, but then goes off onto its own trying to hunt you down. Overall the game play was good and while I personally had some small issues driving and shooting the tank, I would imagine most people would be fine with this.
The game uses bland graphics and audio. While that is not a problem this leads into the design of the game’s 20 levels that are all pretty much the same except for design and color. Throw in that there is no score, power-ups or an enemy counter and you have a pretty bare bones game. While this a functional, working game, I can’t help but feel that this more of a proof of concept than a full game.
This game has no replay value after beating the 20 levels. I beat all the levels and it took me about an hour. And that was with me making a lot of mistakes on some levels, most people will probably beat this game in well under an hour. While games do not need a reason to have replay value, when you can beat a game in an hour or less, it does bring up the question why even bother playing if it brings nothing new to the table?
This is a basic game that works well for what it is. However, once you beat it there is little to no reason to come back to it.
