Nowadays zombie games are everywhere from PC to console to moblie. Indie games are also everywhere you look now. When I saw this game I thought to myself. "Another crappy zombie indie game". But after reading the features of the game and the fact I like top down shooters, I decided to give this game a try. I'm glad I gave this game a chance. While it may not win any awards, it is still a fun game to throw in and kill some time with.
Over 9000 zombies is a pretty straightforward game. Your goal is to survive each wave by killing everything that comes at you. Each wave spawns tougher and larger groups of enemies that will cause more damage and take longer to kill. After each wave you get to pick an upgrade, for example increased weapon damage or increase resource pickup. Once your health goes to zero you die and lose the game.
You start the game with a handgun and a few grenades. Killing zombies or other creatures fills an experience bar for the weapon your using. Once you max out a weapons experience bar you unlock a new weapon or set of weapons. This is how you go about getting the game 25 weapons which vary from shotguns and grenade launchers to plasma rifles and miniguns. I found this path to weapon unlocking to be pretty fun and it had me trying out all of the weapons in the game.
As you are killing creatures they may drop items called scrap. This is what you use to build turrets and barriers from a menu as your playing. While there is only two types of barriers, there is a 11 turret options ranging from simple machine guns to rocket turrets. Both of these items become important as you progress later into the game. During my co-op game with my brother we were only able to put up six turrets at a time and a decent amount of barricades. While you can always tear down turrets and put up stronger ones I find the barriers and turrets to be only somewhat effective in the late stages of the game.
The game comes with six playable maps. One is designed for 4 players, one designed for 2 players and the other four are for one player. While this is a decent selection and some variety in the maps, they all pretty much are the same maps with a different coat of paint. The two and four player maps are bigger, but still looked kind of basic. The game does have a map editor which allows you to create your own maps which is a nice bonus. With this you can create more elaborate and defense-able maps if you so choose.
The games graphics are pretty basic but this works well fro the game. The game uses pixel graphics which allows for some detail, but not an overwhelming amount. The game does a good job with enemy design but again they are not super detailed. I found the stage graphics to be a little duller but they get the job done. The game has some lighting and shadow effects which were neat but nothing great.
I found the audio in the game to be pretty enjoyable. Each gun that you use has a different sound effect and while that may not seem like a big deal it was something that I noticed. The game has a decent in game soundtrack that keeps the player pumped up and felt right with the action going on around you. Well, I did for me at least, for you it might not do anything. The rest of the sound effects were alright, mostly consisting of menu beeps. Nothing fancy or elaborate, but it fits the mood of the game and gets the job done.
The game does support two player co-op over the internet When my brother and I tried this it worked with no problem except we were the only two playing the game online from what we saw. The game also supports four player local co-op which was not tested for this review. This is a game that mostly will be played solo unless you have a friend to go online with.
Overall this was a good game to kill some time with. I found the path to unlocking weapons to be fun and encouraged using all the different ones. The turrets and barricades provided a way to fortify yourself. While the graphics and audio are not amazing, they are not bad either. The only downsides I have is that the map designs were generic and the online mode is dead.
