Faceball 2000 is a game developed by Xanth Software F/X and published by Bullet-Proof Software for the SNES. According to the manual, Faceball 2000 is the greatest virtual reality sport of the future. In reality this is an OK Battlezone style game.
Gameplay involves you moving around in a first person view shooting balls at other smiley type faces called Smiloids. These Smiloids vary from stationary one hit enemies to roaming enemies that can take multiple shots to take out. One feature in this game is that if you take damage, avoiding getting it again for a set amount of time (about 5 seconds) will give you a hit point back. Another is that your bullets keep going after you lose a life, I had a few instances that the enemy got me then I received credit for getting them.
Cyberzone is the game's main mode. In this mode you fight your way through 41 levels of increasing harder enemies leading up to the final boss. There are 6 difficulty levels to pick from that will determine what level you start on. In this mode you can pick up power ups that make you stronger, move faster ect. while special effects that will briefly help. The goal on each floor is to eliminate 10 enemies and enter the exit which opens up. After every 5 floors you do a bonus floor to collect power-ups. If you lose all your lives, you start over at the beginning of whichever area your on (ex. You lose all your lives on floor 8 you start back on floor 6).
Arena plays a little bit differently. Here you pick the amount of enemies (up to 6), how difficult they are and the type of map to play on. There are 16 different maps to play on that vary in size. The goal is to take out 10 enemies to win the match. If you lose ten lives before that you lose. I found this mode to be easier unless you throw in all tough enemies, then it can become a challenge.
I found the game's graphics to be functional at best. Every level looks the same except the color changes and the top of the map changes. The Smiloids look alright, basically deformed smiley faces. The audio in the game is pretty bland. You get some basic stage music and some sound effects. However the game goes say to you "Have a nice day" when you lose a life.
I have two main complaints with the game. One is that when you are shooting at the enemy a big ball comes out in front of you blocking your view. This makes dodging enemy attacks pretty difficult. My other concern is that besides the two modes there is nothing to do in this game. I lost interest in playing after only about 20 minutes.
The game itself I found to be alright but far from great. The game does have a two player mode however I was not able to test this out. Even if I was able to, this game comes down to a Battlezone style game with smiley faces. Fun for a little, boring after awhile unles you like these types of games.
