Devil Daggers is a first person endless horde based game where the game ends when you die. There is no story, just kill everything that comes at you. This is another pickup and play game where you can spend five minutes on it or over an hour. Where this game differs from most is that skill does play a huge factor. Skill plays such a big factor that it almost makes the game unplayable.
Gameplay revolves around you shooting magic daggers at your enemies. Movement is key as enemies will constantly be coming at you and getting hit once kills you. Enemies come in small sizes which move fast and stationary ones that either spawn smaller ones or shoot projectiles at you. The bigger enemies have a red gem weak spot that you need to target to kill them. These gems then fall to the ground and collecting them makes your attacks stronger. Through my playthroughs I only saw maybe four or five different enemies. But then again, my longest playthrough was seventy four seconds.
Ultimately you will die. Your high score is how long you stay alive. There is a leaderboard that shows you the top players and a neat feature is that you can watch their playthrough on how they got their score. This is a great way of seeing different techniques. For example, my brother’s best run was ninety seven seconds and watching his run showed me a few tricks that I could use.
Graphics are pretty bare bones. You can tell that you are fighting different enemies, but all the graphics are slightly pixelated. I’m sure this was by design since everything looks that way. The lighting and enemy death effects looked good though. The audio is there and passable, but nothing to talk about.
Devil Daggers is not for everyone. The game is brutal and unforgiving. While you can just pick up and play, this is a game that requires skill above all else. That is not a bad thing, but it is something that will turn some away if you are just looking for a fun time. However, if you put the time into getting good at it Devil Daggers can be a lot of fun.
