While I am not the best at fighting games, I have always liked the Mortal Kombat series. The series has grown from a small handful of characters in the first game to a series that has a multitude of different characters with there own play styles and personalities. The series is also known for its blood and violence which have only grown with every new release. However, I find the story of of the Mortal Kombat universe to be very interesting. This is something the series has done well and especially when they got into the Xbox/PS2 era was a big selling point of the series to me.
My first Mortal Kombat game was Mortal Kombat 2 for the SNES. I learned very quickly that I was not good at this game. I was only good with Baraka, Kitana and Mileena. But the stage fatalities where something I liked to do since I hardly ever pulled off a character fatality. While I was not good at the game, I still enjoyed it and played it when I was bored.
Mortal Kombat 3 introduced some new characters that become some of my favorites of the series. Sektor and Sindel are characters I was decent with while this was my first time using Sonya and I was decent with her. While I ok at this game, I was still not very good overall. But just like Mortal Kombat 2, I played it when I got bored and I enjoyed it.
I skipped Mortal Kombat games until Deadly Alliance came out for the Xbox. This was the game that got me interested in Mortal Kombat’s overall story. The Konquest mode was fun, I loved the idea of the krypt and there was a decent roster of characters to pick from. The ability to swap between multiple combat/weapon stances was something I really enjoyed and wish the newer games in the series went back to.
Mortal Kombat Deception was the game in the series I spent the most time with. Between the krypt, the roster, the mini games and the konquest mode I really enjoyed this one. This is the only game in the series where I unlocked the whole krypt. While most of the new characters in the game did not interest me, Kira became my favorite one for this game and she was near the top of my top ten list of Mortal Kombat fighters I posted earlier this month. I also like what they did with the konquest mode showing the journey of then one new character Shujinko.
Mortal Kombat Armageddon was crazy just with the sheer amount of characters that they put into it. Being able to play as any character that was in the series up to this point was very fun. I spent most of my time just doing the arcade ladder with my favorite characters to see there endings. Occasionally I would go the go kart racing mini game to break things up. Sadly I was more focused on PC gaming at this time and never put a lot of time into this game.
While I might have skimped on playing Armageddon, I did not on Mortal Kombat 9. This was a reboot of sorts for the series and this game had the best roster of any mortal kombat game I have played. Almost all of my favorites were in here at the time except for Kira. But the game did add Skarlet who became my new favorite. The story was great and the tower kept me coming back regularly.
Then Mortal Kombat X came out and I was not initially pleased with the game. No Baraka, Skarlet or a lot of my favorite characters. There were still some there and I did get decent using Cassie Cage. When I finally got into the game I did enjoy the story mode and the direction they took the series. I actually had more fun with the mobile game. While not great, I find it entertaining and play it regularly.
While I focused on the main games in the series I also have played the Shaolin Monks side game which was alright and I own the Jax game but haven’t played it it. I have also read the Mortal Kombat X comic and liked on how it expanded the story for the Mortal Kombat universe. In the end I am never going to be great at these games. And that is ok with me as long as they keep adding good stories, characters and modes to the games.
